Rachel needs to catch a flight departing at 6:15 pm. Her work meeting ends at exactly 5:00 pm, and it takes her 7 minutes to catch a taxi and then an additional 18 minutes to reach the airport entrance. Once there, she has to stop by the security checkpoint, which is a 7-minute walk from the entrance. After passing through security, it takes her another 6 minutes to reach her gate, which will close 10 minutes prior to departure.
How much time can Rachel spend at the security checkpoint before she risks missing her flight?

Rachel leaves her work meeting at exactly 5:00 pm. She catches a taxi at 5:07 pm. She reaches the airport entrance at 5:25 pm, after an 18-minute taxi ride. She reaches the security checkpoint at 5:32, after a 7-minute walk. After leaving security she must get to her boarding gate by 6:04 pm at the latest, as the gate will close at 6:05 pm. Given the gate is a 6-minute walk from the security checkpoint, she must leave from the security checkpoint by 5:58 at the latest. Rachel can spend no more than 26 minutes at the security checkpoint in order to catch her flight on time. |
