Minute Mystery: Bookish Logic

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Bookish Logic

Four students at the Oddtown Heritage College have each checked out a different number of books from the library.

  • Amy and Barry together borrowed a total of 7 books.
  • Barry and Coco together borrowed a total of 9 books.
  • Coco and Danny together borrowed a total of 5 books.
  • Danny borrowed 2 books.

Using the given clues, can you determine how many books each student borrowed?

Solution

Let's solve the puzzle step by step:

Given: Danny borrowed 2 books.

From clue 3: Coco and Danny together borrowed a total of 5 books. Since Danny borrowed 2 books, Coco borrowed 5 − 2 = 3 books.

From clue 2: Barry and Coco together borrowed a total of 9 books. Since Coco borrowed 3 books, Barry borrowed 9 − 3 = 6 books.

From clue 1: Amy and Barry together borrowed a total of 7 books. Since Barry borrowed 6 books, Amy borrowed 7 − 6 = 1 book.

The number of books each student borrowed is:

  • Amy: 1 book
  • Barry: 6 books
  • Coco: 3 books
  • Danny: 2 books
