Café Cup Conundrum
At a small café, the total number of cups of coffee sold in the morning is 50. The café offers three sizes: small, medium, and large. You know the following:
- The number of medium cups sold is twice the number of large cups sold.
- The number of small cups sold is 10 fewer than the number of large cups sold.
How many cups of each size were sold?
Solution

Let:
Express the other quantities in terms of l:
Set up the equation using the total cups sold s + m + l = 50
Substitute the expressions for s and m: (l−10) + 2l + l = 50
Simplify and solve for l: (l−10) + 2l + l = 50 4l − 10 = 50 4l = 60 l = 15
Determine the number of medium and small cups.
Total cups = 5 + 30 + 15 = 50
The cafe sold 5 small cups, 30 medium cups, and 15 large cups of coffee. |
