Minute Mystery: Café Cup Conundrum

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Café Cup Conundrum

At a small café, the total number of cups of coffee sold in the morning is 50. The café offers three sizes: small, medium, and large. You know the following:

  1. The number of medium cups sold is twice the number of large cups sold.
  2. The number of small cups sold is 10 fewer than the number of large cups sold.

How many cups of each size were sold?

Solution

Let:

  • s = number of small cups sold
  • m = number of medium cups sold
  • l = number of large cups sold

Express the other quantities in terms of l:

  • Number of medium cups, m = 2l
  • Number of small cups, s = l −10

Set up the equation using the total cups sold

s + m + l = 50

Substitute the expressions for s and m:

(l−10) + 2l + l = 50

Simplify and solve for l:

(l−10) + 2l + l = 50

4l − 10 = 50

4l = 60

l = 15

Determine the number of medium and small cups.

  • Medium cups: m = 2l = 2×15 = 30
  • Small cups: l = l − 10 = 15 − 10 = 5

Total cups = 5 + 30 + 15 = 50

  • Small cups: 5
  • Medium cups: 30
  • Large cups: 15

The cafe sold 5 small cups, 30 medium cups, and 15 large cups of coffee.
