Minute Mystery: Conference Crunch

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Conference Crunch

John has a crucial presentation at his office's annual conference at 2:00 pm. He also has attend his son's baseball game earlier that day at 12:00 pm, which is a 20-minute drive from his office.

How long can John stay at the game given he needs to reach his office 15 minutes before the conference starts?

Solution

To solve this, we need to determine the latest time John can leave the baseball game and still arrive at his office 15 minutes before the conference starts.

  • Conference start time: 2:00 pm
  • Time to arrive before conference: 15 minutes before 2:00 pm, which is 1:45 pm.
  • Travel time from the baseball game to office: 20 minutes

John needs to arrive at his office by 1:45 pm. Therefore, he needs to leave the baseball game 20 minutes before 1:45 pm.

1:45 pm − 20 minutes = 1:25 pm

John needs to leave the baseball game by 1:25 pm.

Since the baseball game starts at 12:00 pm, the amount of time he can stay at the game is:

1:25 pm−12:00 pm = 1 hour and 25 minutes

John can stay at the baseball game for 1 hour and 25 minutes before he has to leave to reach his office on time.
