Minute Mystery: Cushion Count

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Cushion Count

Mia receives an order for 100 cushions and has 4 days to prepare it. Working alone, she can sew 15 cushions a day. To meet the deadline, she hires part-timer Amy, who can sew 10 cushions a day working an 8-hour shift and charges $12 per hour.

How much does Mia have to pay Amy to help complete the order?

Solution

  • Total order: 100 cushions
  • Days to complete order: 4 days
  • Mia's sewing rate: 15 cushions per day
  • Amy's sewing rate: 10 cushions per day

Mia can sew 60 cushions in 4 days

Amy can sew 40 cushions in 4 days

That would total to 100 cushions in 4 days

In order to complete the order, Mia must hire Amy for 4 days

  • Amy's hourly rate: $12 per hour
  • Amy's daily shift: 8 hours

To calculate Amy's payment:

8 hours/day x 4 days = 32 hours

32 hours x $12 / hour = $384

Mia has to pay Amy $384 to help complete the order.
