Minute Mystery: Departure Dilemma

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Departure Dilemma

Liam needs to catch a train departing from the station at 4:45 PM. His meeting ends at 4:15 PM, and it takes him 10 minutes to walk from the meeting location to the train station's entrance. However, he also needs to stop by the post office, which is a 5-minute walk after crossing the train station's entrance, to mail an important letter. Liam needs another 5 minutes to walk from the train station's entrance to the platform where his train departs.

How long can Liam spend at the post office and still catch his train on time?

Solution

To find out how long Liam can spend at the post office and still catch his train on time, we'll subtract the total time needed for walking.

Meeting ends: 4:15 PM

Time needed for walking from meeting location to the train station's entrance: 10 minutes

Time needed for walking from the train station's entrance to the post office : 5 minutes

Time needed for walking from the post office to the train station's entrance: 5 minutes

Time needed for walking from the train station's entrance to the platform: 5 minutes

Liam has from 4:15 PM to 4:45 PM, which is a total of 30 minutes. Subtracting the time needed for walking:

30 minutes - (10 minutes + 5 minutes + 5 minutes = 5 minutes) = 5 minutes

Liam can spend 5 minutes at the post office and still catch his train on time.
