Minute Mystery: Doorway Dilemma

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Doorway Dilemma

Simon faces a challenge to rescue his captured friend, who is imprisoned in one of three adjacent rooms. Each room presents a unique door, adorned with a plaque bearing inscriptions: "Danger" for the red door, "Void" for the yellow door, and "Friend" for the green door. However, each plaque is affixed to the incorrect door. Behind one door lies Simon's friend, behind another awaits a sworn enemy, and behind the third lies nothingness.

With only two attempts to open the doors, how can Simon navigate the doors to reach his friend in either the first or second try, given he must avoid opening the door to his enemy?

Solution

Given all plaques are affixed to the incorrect doors, these are the possible options Simon would find behind each door:

Red door

Yellow door

Green door

Nothingness

Enemy

Nothingness

Friend

Friend

Enemy

Simon must avoid opening any doors that may lead to his enemy, which means it's safest to open the red door, which would lead him either to nothingness or his friend. If his friend is behind the red door, he would find him in the first try. However, if he finds nothingness there, he has one last try left to rescue his friend. In that case, given he found nothingness behind the red door, it cannot be behind the green door. That means, Simon's enemy is behind the green door and cannot be behind the yellow door.

Simon's friend is behind the yellow door.
