Minute Mystery: Homes and Pets

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Homes and Pets

In a neighborhood with four differently colored houses in a row, lives a different pet.

  1. The cat lives in the first house.
  2. The dog lives in the red house.
  3. The bird lives next to the cat.
  4. The rabbit lives in the yellow house.
  5. One of the houses is green.
  6. The red house is between the blue and yellow houses.

Using the clues provided, can you determine in order of the homes the color of each house and the pet that lives there?

Solution

Clue 1: The cat lives in the first house.

Clue 3: The bird lives next to cat, so it must be in the second house.

Clues 2 and 6: The dog lives in the red house which is between the blue and yellow houses. Since the red house is between two houses, the dog can only be in the second or third house. But since the bird lives in the second house, the dog lives in the third house, which is red.

Clue 4: The rabbit lives in the yellow house. Since the only remaining house is the last, the rabbit lives in the fourth house, which is yellow.

Clues 4, 5, and 6: Since the red house is between the blue and yellow houses and the rabbit lives in the yellow one, the blue house is where the bird lives. The remaining green house is where the cat lives.

Here is the order of the homes, the color of each house, and the pet that lives there:

First house - Green - Cat

Second house - Blue - Bird

Third house - Red - Dog

Fourth house - Yellow - Rabbit
