Minute Mystery: The Farmer’s Dilemma

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Farmer’s Dilemma

Category: Logic, Classic Riddle

A farmer needs to carry a fox, a chicken, and a bag of grain across a river. He can only carry one of each at a time, and if left alone together:

  • The chicken will eat the grain.
  • The fox will eat the chicken.

How does the farmer get everything across safely?

Solution

To get all three across safely, the farmer would need to follow these steps:

  1. Take the chicken across.
  2. Go back and take the fox, but bring the chicken back.
  3. Leave the chicken, take the grain across.
  4. Come back alone and finally take the chicken.

This way, everything arrives safely.
