Minute Mystery: The Fruit Basket

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Fruit Basket

A fruit vendor has a basket containing apples, oranges, and pears. The vendor gives you these clues:

  1. The basket holds 30 fruits in total.
  2. The number of apples is exactly twice the number of oranges.
  3. There are 5 fewer pears than apples.

How many apples, oranges, and pears are in the basket?

Solution

Let:
  • o = number of oranges
  • a = number of apples
  • p = number of pears

From the clues:

  • a = 2o (Clue 2)
  • p = a − 5 (Clue 3)
  • p = 2o − 5 (Clues 2 and 3)

The total number of fruits is 30, so:

o + a + p = 30

Substitute the expressions for a and p:

o + 2o + (2o−5) = 30

5o − 5 = 30

50 = 35

o = 7

Find the numbers of apples and pears

  • Since a = 2o, a = 2 × 7 = 14
  • Since p = a - 5, p = 14 - 5 = 9

Total fruits = 7 + 14 + 9 = 30

  • Apples: 14
  • Oranges: 7
  • Pears: 9

There are 14 apples, 7 oranges, and 9 pears in the fruit basket.
