The Jar of Marbles

Category: Probability

A jar contains:

  • 5 red marbles

  • 5 blue marbles

You draw two marbles without looking.

What's the probability they are the same color?

A) 4/9
B) 1/2
C) 5/9

Solution

Chance of first marble bring red: 5/10

Chance of second marble bring red: 4/9

Chances of both marbles being red: 5/10 × 4/9 = 2/9

Chance of first marble bring blue: 5/10

Chance of second marble bring blue: 4/9

Chances of both marbles being blue: 5/10 × 4/9 = 2/9

Total = 4/9
