Minute Mystery: The Magical Potions

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Magical Potions

Three wizards—Alden, Beatrix, and Cedric—are brewing magical potions. Each wizard brews a specific number of potions daily.

  1. Together, they brew 96 potions in one day.
  2. Alden brews twice as many potions as Beatrix.
  3. Cedric brews 8 more potions than Beatrix.

How many potions does each wizard brew in a day?

Solution

Let's assume Alden brews a number of potions, Beatrix brews b number of potions, and Cedric brews c number of potions.

From Clue 1:

a + b + c = 96

From Clue 2:

a = 2b

From Clue 3:

c = b + 8

From total potions brewed

  • a + b + c = 96
  • 2b + b + (b + 8) = 96
  • 4b + 8 = 96
  • 4b = 88
  • b = 22

Solve for a and c:

  • a = 2b = 2(22) = 44
  • c = b + 8 = 22 + 8 = 30

a  = 44
b = 22

c = 30

In a day, Alden brews 44 potions, Beatrix brews 22 potions, and Cedric brews 30 potions.
