Minute Mystery: The Mirror Number

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Mirror Number

Category: Math, Number Puzzle

Find the smallest two-digit number that, when its digits are reversed, becomes exactly 9 greater than the original number.

Solution

Let the original number be 10a + b

Reversing its digits gives 10b + a

The condition is:
10b + a = (10a + b) + 9

10b + a – 10ab = 9

9b - 9a = 9

9 (b – a) = 9

b – a = 1.

The answer should be 12, since 1 and 2 differ by 1, and 21 – 12 = 9

The smallest two-digit number meeting this criteria is 12.
