Minute Mystery: The Mismatched Socks

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Mismatched Socks

Category: Logic, Probability

You have a drawer with 10 black socks, 10 white socks, and 10 gray socks, all mixed up. The room is dark, and you can’t tell the colors apart by touch.

What is the minimum number of socks you must pull out to guarantee you have at least one matching pair?

Solution

To guarantee a matching pair, you only need to pull out 4 socks.
Even if you pull out one of each color in the first three tries, the fourth sock must match one of the previous three.

Answer: 4
