Minute Mystery: The Number Trick

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Number Trick

Category: Math, Number Magic

  • Pick any 3‑digit number whose first and last digits differ by at least 2 (and aren’t the same).
  • Reverse its digits and subtract the smaller from the larger number.
  • Then take that result, reverse its digits, and add the two.
  • What number do you always get?

Solution

No matter which valid 3‑digit number you start with, you always end up with 1089.
  1. Example: start with 742 → reverse 247 → 742−247 = 495

  2. Reverse 495 → 594 → 495 + 594 = 1089
