Minute Mystery: The Patio Project

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Patio Project

Jake is contracted to renovate a backyard patio. He estimates it will take him 4 days to complete the project, working a 9-hour shift each day. Each day includes two 45-minute breaks. Jake charges $50 per hour for working time and $25 per hour for break time.

If Jake finishes the job within the estimated time, how much will he earn?

Solution

Let's calculate how much Jake can earn in one day.

During his 9-hour shift, Emma puts in 8 hours of working time and 1.5 hours total of break time.

$50 x 8 working hours = $400 earned during working hours

$25 x 1.5 hour = $37.50 earned during break time

$280 + $20 = $437.50 earned during one full day

Jake earns $437.50 in one day

$437.50 x 4 days = $900

Jake will earn a total of $1,750 if he complete the job within the estimated time of 4 days.
