Minute Mystery: The Potion Puzzle

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Potion Puzzle

In a mystical apothecary, there are five potions, each a different color: Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Purple. Each potion grants a unique magical ability: Invisibility, Flight, Growth, Shrink, or Animal Communication.

Use the clues below to determine which potion grants which ability.

  1. The potion that grants Flight is not Blue or Green.
  2. The potion that grants Animal Communication is not Purple or Yellow.
  3. The Green potion grants the power to Shrink.
  4. The Red potion grants Invisibility.
  5. The Blue potion does not grant the power to Grow.
  6. The Purple potion does not grant the power to Fly.

Solution

Direct assignments:
  • From Clue 3: Green → Shrink
  • From Clue 4: Red → Invisibility

Eliminate possibilities for Animal Communication:

  • Clue 2 tells us that Animal Communication cannot be in the Purple or Yellow potions
  • With Red and Green already assigned, the only possibility left is the Blue potion
  • Therefore: Blue → Animal Communication

Determine the remaining abilities:

  • The remaining abilities to assign are Flight and Growth
  • The remaining colors are Yellow and Purple

Assign Flight based on clues:

  • Clue 6 states that the Purple potion does not grant Flight
  • Thus, Yellow must grant Flight

Assign the last remaining ability:

  • With Yellow assigned to Flight, the only remaining ability for Purple is Growth

Abilities granted by each potion:

  • Red potion: Invisibility
  • Blue potion: Animal Communication
  • Green potion: Shrink
  • Yellow potion: Flight
  • Purple potion: Growth
