Minute Mystery: The School Supervisor

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The School Supervisor

Ms. Taylor, the diligent supervisor of Oddtown Elementary School, regularly makes rounds through the school during her shift. During each round, she spends 30 minutes checking in on each classroom, 5 minutes in the cafeteria, 10 minutes at the playground, 5 minutes at the gym, and 20 minutes walking through the rest of the school. After each round, Ms. Taylor spends 30 minutes at her desk filing paperwork and resolving other matters before looping back to the classrooms to begin her next round.

During her 8-hour shift, which includes two 20-minute breaks, how many complete rounds can Ms. Taylor make around the school in one day?

Solution

Let's first calculate how much time a single round takes

30 + 5 + 10 + 5 + 20 = 70 minutes

Add in the 30 minutes Ms. Taylor spends at her desk at the end of each round

70 + 30 = 100 minutes

A single complete round totals to 100 minutes

Ms. Taylor's shift is 8 hours or 480 minutes. She takes two 20-minute breaks for a total of 40 minutes of break time.

480 - 40 = 440

In 440 minutes of working time, let's see how many 100-minute rounds Ms. Taylor can complete:

440 / 100 = 4.4

Ms. Taylor can make 4 complete rounds around the school in one day.
