Minute Mystery: The T-Shirt Order

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The T-Shirt Order

Derek receives an order to produce 120 custom t-shirts in 4 days. Working alone, he can print 18 shirts per day. To meet the deadline, he hires his friend Jenny, who can print 12 shirts per day working an 8-hour shift and charges $15 per hour.

How much will Derek have to pay Jenny to help complete the order on time?

Solution

  • Total order: 120 t-shirts
  • Days to complete order: 4 days
  • Derek's speed: 18 t-shirts per day
  • Jenny's speed: 12 t-shirts per day

18 x 4 = 72

12 x 4 = 48

Derek can print 72 t-shirts in 4 days

Jenny can print 48 t-shirts in 4 days

That would total to 120 t-shirts in 4 days

In order to complete the order, Derek must hire Jenny for 4 days

  • Jenny's hourly rate: $15 per hour
  • Jenny's daily shift: 8 hours

To calculate Jenny's payment:

8 hours/day x 4 days = 32 hours

32 hours x $15 / hour = $480

Derek has to pay Jenny $480 to help complete the order.
