Minute Mystery: The Three Boxes

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

The Three Boxes

Category: Deductive Logic

There are three boxes: Gold, Silver, Bronze. Only one contains a prize.

  • Gold box says: “The prize is not here.”

  • Silver box says: “The prize is in Gold.”

  • Bronze box says: “The prize is not in Silver.”

Only one statement is true.

Where is the prize?

Solution

Let's analyze the statements in all scenarios:

If the prize is in the Gold box:

  • Gold box says: “The prize is not here.” - FALSE

  • Silver box says: “The prize is in Gold.” - TRUE

  • Bronze box says: “The prize is not in Silver.” - TRUE

Since only one of the statements can be true, the prize is not in the Gold box.

If the prize is in the Silver box:

  • Gold box says: “The prize is not here.” - TRUE

  • Silver box says: “The prize is in Gold.” - FALSE

  • Bronze box says: “The prize is not in Silver.” - FALSE

Since only one of the statements is true, the prize is in the Silver box.

If the prize is in the Bronze box:

  • Gold box says: “The prize is not here.” - TRUE

  • Silver box says: “The prize is in Gold.” - FALSE

  • Bronze box says: “The prize is not in Silver.” - TRUE

Since only one of the statements can be true, the prize is not in the Bronze box.

Answer: The prize is in the Silver box.
