Minute Mystery: Tuition Time

Bite-sized brain teaser to solve in a minute or less.

Tuition Time

Professor James tutors students in mathematics from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every weekday. He allocates 30 minutes per student for private tutoring sessions and conducts two 1-hour 5-student group study sessions daily. Additionally, he takes two 30-minute breaks during the day.

How many students can Professor James tutor in one day with his full schedule?

Solution

Professor James' working day is 8 hours long. Of those 8 hours, he takes a total of 1 hour (two 30-minute breaks) in break time. So, he tutors for a total of 7 hours.

He conducts two 1-hour sessions, leaving him with 5 hours to conduct private sessions.

He teaches 1 student per 30 minutes, or 2 students per hour during the private sessions

5 hours x 2 students = 10 students per day during private sessions

He teaches 5 students per group during two group sessions

2 hours x 5 students = 10 students per day during group sessions

10 + 10 = 20 students

Professor James can tutor 20 students in one day with a full schedule.
