December 2023

Find who peeked at the exam paper in this three-part mystery game.

Solve mildly challenging puzzles to unlock the mystery.

Concluding his lecture on "Introduction to Effective Communication" for first-year students at Oddtown Heritage College at precisely 12:30 pm, Mr. Links remained in the now-deserted lecture hall to review assignments. At 1:03 pm, he proceeded to his office. A realization struck him at 1:18 pm – his briefcase, containing the upcoming week's exam paper for second-year students, was inadvertently left behind. Swiftly retracing his steps to the lecture hall, Mr. Links discovered the briefcase, seemingly untouched, and upon inspection, found that nothing was missing, including the crucial exam paper. However, a perplexing discovery awaited him – the exam paper wasn't precisely where he had initially placed it. It had been extracted from the designated folder and discreetly repositioned in a different one. It became evident that a second-year student had clandestinely infiltrated the lecture hall after Mr. Links and the first-year students had departed, taking an illicit peek at the upcoming exam questions. Now tasked with crafting a new exam paper, Mr. Links is unwavering in his determination to unearth the identity of the student who committed this academic transgression.

Can you assist Mr. Links in unraveling the mystery, identifying which second-year student engaged in this college crime and discerning the motive behind their actions?

Part Three

This is Part Three of a three-part series. You may choose to first solve Part One and Part Two. Otherwise, you may just solve this puzzle.

Please note: The results from the previous two puzzles may have been shared within the puzzle below.

Clue:

Mr. Links, in his pursuit of truth, summoned the final three suspects to his office and engaged in individual conversations. Each of the three vehemently denied any wrongdoing. Mr. Links, persisting in his quest for clarity, requested permission to search their bags—a proposition met with reluctance yet eventual agreement from all three.

Here are the discoveries from each suspect's bag:

Emily Enroll's bag:

A college library card, revealing Emily recently checked out several books, several of which focused on the subject of Communication.

Alex Academic's bag:

A dedicated notebook specifically for the subject of Communication, meticulously chronicling all of Mr. Links' lectures in intricate detail.

Sarah Semester's bag:

A response letter to a scholarship application, detailing strict qualification criteria, including minimum grade requirements.

Can you determine which of the three suspects might be the elusive culprit?

Hint

Consider who is studying hard for the subject and also who may be desperate to achieve a good grade.

Solution

Emily has been borrowing books on the subject and Alex has been taking extensive notes in class, indicating that both have been studying hard and may likely be well prepared to take the upcoming exam. Sarah really needs a good grade to qualify for a scholarship, indicating that she may be desperate enough to take a peek at the exam paper. Sarah is the culprit.
