Monthly Mystery: The Fake Painting - Part Three

September 2023

Find the real painting in this three-part mystery game.

Solve mildly challenging puzzles to unlock the mystery.

In the routine activities of the Oddtown Art Gallery, Lisa, the gallery director, and her assistant, Angela, stumbled upon an unsettling discovery during their final walkthrough of the day. A small but valuable painting had been swapped with a convincing fake. While the replacement looked similar from a distance, Lisa discerned the deception up close. The original painting had adorned the space earlier that morning, verified by Lisa's routine walkthroughs at the day's onset and close. With only Tessa, the receptionist overseeing visitor check-ins, and Randy, the diligent guard conducting rounds throughout the gallery, as the sole staff present, the situation implicates an audacious visitor who stole the original and replaced it with a forgery on the same day. The absence of interior cameras complicates the investigation. Engage with the clues presented in this three-part mystery to unravel the plot and pinpoint which gallery visitor orchestrated the heist of the original painting.

Part Three

This is Part Three of a three-part series. You may choose to first solve Part One and Part Two. Otherwise, you may just solve this puzzle.

Please note: The results from the previous two puzzles may have been shared within the puzzle below.

Clue:

The names of the narrowed-down suspects have been forwarded to the police. In response to inquiries, both suspects asserted to law enforcement that recent arm injuries rendered them incapable of lifting and replacing a painting. The police, seeking confirmation, reached out to the respective doctors of the suspects. Below are the notes from their medical professionals.

Can you review these notes and determine which of the gallery visitors might have been responsible for taking the original painting.

To whom it may concern

This is to certify that my patient, Ms. Wendy Watercolor, has received care for a humerus fracture in my office. There was a hairline fracture in her upper right arm and Ms. Watercolor wore a cast from April 6, 1985 to May 9, 1985. She has since received a follow-up visit to ensure her arm is healing well.

Sincerely,

Dr. Francis Fixer

Re: Patient Inquiry

I am writing in response to the inquiry regarding our patient, Mr. Peter Palette.

Mr. Palette has been receiving treatment for a comminuted fracture in his arm since May 31. He underwent surgery on June 1 involving a rod placement. The patient checked out of the clinic on June 7 and has been visiting our office for weekly check-ups until his arm fully heals so we can remove his cast.

Regards,

Dr. Henry Healer

Hint

Which one of the suspects still has a disability that may prevent them from taking off a painting and replacing it with another one?

Solution

As per the doctors' reports dated June 19, both suspects experienced recent arm injuries. Wendy Watercolor endured a hairline fracture on April 6, with her cast removed on May 9. In contrast, Peter Palette suffered a comminuted fracture on May 31, underwent surgery on June 1 for rod placement, and is presently wearing a cast while undergoing treatment.

Considering the severity and recency of Peter Palette's injury, it appears his mobility would be significantly restricted, rendering him incapable of removing a painting and replacing it with another.

Wendy Watercolor stole the painting.
