Monthly Mystery: The Hidden Chamber - Part Three

February 2024

Find a missing archaeologist in quest of an ancient chamber.

Solve mildly challenging puzzles to unlock the mystery.

Franny, the assistant researcher of the brilliant yet slightly eccentric archeologist Dr. Discovery, has been stationed at the ruins of the ancient city of Oddrona for the past two years. Their mission: to uncover a hidden chamber rumored to hold ancient texts unveiling secrets lost to time. Upon returning from a weekend trip to a nearby town, Franny discovers her boss's office in disarray, accompanied by a hurried note on her desk that reads, “Find me if I’m not back by Sunday.” With Monday morning already upon her, Franny fears her boss may be lost, possibly without sustenance. In a state of panic, Franny initiates a search for clues. Can you assist Franny in scrutinizing the clues and guide her in locating Dr. Discovery?

Part Three

This is Part Three of a three-part series. You may choose to first solve Part One and Part Two. Otherwise, you may just solve this puzzle.

Please note: The results from the previous two puzzles may have been shared within the puzzle below.

Clue:

In the depths beneath the ruins of Oddrona, Franny unravels clues that prompt one of the walls to ascend, revealing a torch-lit hallway. At its other end stands a door leading to a chamber teeming with scrolls and books. Franny discovers Dr. Discovery weakened on the floor. As she aids him, a grinding noise startles her, prompting her to return to the hallway. The entrance wall has sealed shut. Rushing back to Dr. Discovery, she assists him and provides water. Dr. Discovery explains he combed through the texts but is unable to unlock the wall. Franny observes a thick cable spanning the ceilings of the chamber and hallway with a wheeled pulley system at the entrance wall – the mechanism for raising and lowering it. Investigating further, she finds the other end of the cable leading into a locked trunk in the corner of the chamber.

Dr. Discovery points out an illustration resembling the trunk from one of the scrolls in the chamber. The ancient text on the scroll, which Dr. Discovery has skillfully deciphered, instructs: "Knock thrice on each of the four columns. But beware, the incorrect order will lock you in for good." Positioned in each corner of the room are columns adorned with distinct symbols.

  • Earth
  • Fire
  • Air
  • Water
